In one trial, administration of an aged garlic extract reduced the number of infections and relieved diarrhea (page 163) in a group of patients with AIDS.77 Garlic's active constituents have also been shown to kill HIV in the test tube, though these results have not been confirmed in human trials.78
A preliminary trial of isolated andrographolides, found in andrographis (page 626), determined that while they decreased viral load and increased CD4 lymphocyte levels in people with HIV infection, they also caused potentially serious liver problems and changes in taste in many of the participants. |

The same can be said for aged garlic and garlic oil products, as these forms of garlic contain absolutely no allicin or allicin-degradation products.
There are a couple of vital considerations when choosing a garlic product. First of all, it is important to make sure that the product provides a sufficient level of allicin. Since allicin is not actually in the product at any significant levels, manufacturers often refer to the allicin potential or allicin yield. These terms signify the amount of allicin produced when alli-inase is activated in the garlic tablet or powder. |

Pretreatment with aged garlic extract (1-4 pg-mLr1) also protected cultured pulmonary vascular endothelial cells from subsequent oxidative injury induced by hydrogen peroxide, and inhibits Cu2+ induced oxidative modification of low-density lipoproteins in vitro.94 Using molecular biology techniques, the expression of several genes, including FR alpha, calcyclin, and nexon, has been shown to be up-regulated in human gastric cancer cells, following treatment with allitride garlic extract. |

Aged garlic products lack allicin, but may have activity due to the presence of S-allylcysteine.
Many publications have shown that garlic supports the cardiovascular system. While earlier trials suggest it may mildly lower cholesterol (page 223) and triglyceride (page 235) levels in the blood,2,3'4 more recent trials found garlic to have minimal success in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides.5, 6'7 Garlic also inhibits platelet stickiness (aggregation) and increases fibrinolysis,8 which results in a slowing of blood coagulation. |
| Aged garlic extract, but not raw garlic, has been shown, to prevent oxidation of LDL cholesterol in humans,97 an event believed to be a significant factot in the development of atherosclerosis.
Ginkgo (page 681) may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis by interfering with a chemical the body sometimes makes in excess, called platelet activating factor (PAF).98 PAF stimulates platelets to stick together too much; ginkgo stops this from happening. Ginkgo also increases blood circulation to the brain, arms, and legs.99
Garlic and ginkgo also decrease excessive blood coagulation. |
| In most but not all trials, aged garlic extracts and garlic oil (both containing no allicin) have not lowered cholesterol levels in humans.315, 316 Therefore, neither of these supplements can be recommended at this time for cholesterol lowering. Odor-controlled, enteric-coated tablets standardized for allicin content are available and, in some trials, appear more promising.317 Doctors typically recommend 900 mg per day (providing 5,000 to 6,000 meg of allicin), divided into two or three admininstrations. |

It might be added that the credibility that garlic has enjoyed is in large degree due to the result of well over one hundred scientific studies that have been conducted on aged garlic extract and its constituents, not on allicin. The constituents that are unique to aged garlic extract include S-allymercaptocysteine and others. Those who insist that allicin is the key to garlic's potency will also insist that garlic should be eaten raw or lightly cooked. However, one researcher, Dr. |

Garlic oil is not present in fresh or dried garlic bulbs; instead, the oil is produced by converting water-soluble thiosulfinates to oil-soluble sulfides via steam distillation. aged garlic involves long-term extraction in dilute ethanol for up to 20 months, then drying; pickling garlic involves immersion in vinegar (5% acetic acid) (Amagase et al, 2001; Lawson, 1998a).

Therefore, I recommend that aged garlic extract from Japan be given instead: one-half teaspoon of the liquid twice daily or two capsules of the aged garlic-chromium formula opened and their contents mixed in with every meal. (See Product Appendix under Wakunga.)
Two other herbs I have used a lot in animal and human diabetes cases are kelp and dandelion root. Generally, the encapsulated powders work better for this type of problem than a tea or liquid might. I always use them together, never alone. For every two capsules of dandelion root, I include one tablet or capsule of kelp. |

Why the Emphasis on Quality Water?
Continual hydrating and rehydrating of the body is very important. If the body becomes dehydrated, it is thrown into "crisis mode" and many vital functions shut down or cease to work effectively. For this reason, it is important to select the best sources of water available and drink at least eight glasses a day. |

Duration of Administration
Long-term treatment is generally advised in the prevention of atherosclerosis (Koscielny et al., 1999), and the prophylaxis and treatment of peripheral arterial vascular diseases (ESCOP, 1997). Epidemiological observations support the long-term consistent use for prevention of cancer in the stomach and intestines (You et al, 1989). |

When working with a sulfur compound for use against prostate cancer, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York found that aged garlic, referred to as S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC), improved the breakdown of testosterone significantly. The SAMC aged garlic extract slowed the cancer cell's growth by as much as 70 percent compared to untreated cells. This compound in garlic also cut the production of two proteins in the blood, including the prostate-specific antigen or PSA. The PSA test is the most widely used blood test for prostate cancer screening. |

The data for aged garlic in the precedin; table are based on a recently completed double-blind study of forty-one men with beginning cholesterol levels in the 220- to 290-mg/dl range.28 The men received either aged garlic (7.2 grams per day!) or a placebo for six months and then were switched to the other supplement for an additional four months. The results demonstrated a reduction of total cholesterol of seven percent, and LDL cholesterol of four percent, but no changes in HDL cholesterol or triglyceride levels were noted. The systolic blood pressure dropped an average of 5. |
| These results were generally achieved within one to three months; significantly better results are achieved in a shorter amount of time with the fresh garlic preparations compared to aged garlic.
Blood pressure reductions have also been greater when using fresh garlic preparations than when using aged garlic. With fresh garlic preparations, typical reductions of 11 mm Hg for the systolic and 5.0 in the diastolic are usually achieved within a one- to three-month period. |
